On Apr. 8, the feast of the Annunciation, Bishop Folda blessed the new building for St. Benedict’s Church in Horace. Area priests and parishioners gathered for the occasion to celebrate a new step in the parish’s mission.
“This new parish home is a manifestation of the incarnation of our Lord, a sign that he continues to come to us, to dwell with us, to bestow the blessing of God upon us,” said Bishop Folda in his homily. “It’s a new chapter, a new location for St. Benedict’s, but the mission and the meaning remain the same.”
St. Benedict’s was previously about 5.5 miles southeast of its new site. The Red River diversion project and a growing population in Horace were factors leading the parish to make the move.
“I’m just amazed at the number of new homes that have gone up in such short time in this neighborhood, and more are on the way,” Bishop Folda said. “That, of course, presents an opportunity and a responsibility. Just like every parish, you have a mission to witness and share the gift of faith with others, especially those who are moving here along with you.”
The altar, ambo, and reredos (decoration behind the altar that often includes the tabernacle and religious images) from the old building were incorporated at the new site.
The current space will serve as the sanctuary until the new church is built, at which time it will become the church’s social hall. No date is currently set for the church’s groundbreaking.
